A slower approach to Family Photography
There is a quiet shift happening in the way families are choosing to be photographed and honestly, it feels long overdue.
For so long, family photography has been about efficiency. quick sessions, perfectly posed smiles, a checklist of images to capture before time runs out. and while there is nothing wrong with that, it often misses something deeper…the feeling of what this season of life is actually like.
a SLOWER APPROACH TO FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY INVITES SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
iT’S NOT ABOUT RUSHING FROM POSE TO POSE OR TRYING TO CREATE A VERSION OF YOUR FAMILY THAT FEELS POLISHED AND PUT TOGETHER. IT’S ABOUT GIVING YOU THE SPACE TO SETTLE IN, TO BREATHE, AND TO SIMPLY BE WITH EACH OTHER. BECAUSE WHEN YOU SLOW DOWN, SOMETHING SHIFTS. SHOULDERS RELAX. KIDS STOP BEING “ON.” PARENTS SOFTEN. AND WHAT UNFOLDS IS REAL CONNECTION.
DURING A SLOWER, LIFESTYLE SESSION THERE’S ROOM FOR THE IN-BETWEEN MOMENTS, THE ONES THAT CAN’T BE PLANNED OR POSED. A BABY CURLING NATURALLY INTO A PARENTS CHEST. A QUIET GLANCE BETWEEN PARTNERS. THE INSTINCTIVE WAY YOU REACH FOR YOUR CHILD WITHOUT THINKING. THESE MOMENTS MIGHT SEEM SMALL IN THE MOMENT, BUT THEY’RE THE ONES THAT CARRY THE MOST MEANING OVER TIME.
THREE HANDS, ONE BEGINNING
HELD TOGETHER IN THE QUIET, BEAUTIFUL IN- BETWEEN.
SLOWING DOWN ALSO MEANS LETTING GO OF THE PRESSURE TO PERFORM. YOUR KIDS DON’T NEED TO SIT STILL. YOUR HOME (OR SPACE) DOESN’T NEED TO BE PERFECT. YOU DON’T NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR HANDS. YOU’RE ALLOWED TO SHOW UP EXACTLY AS YOU ARE, IN WHATEVER SEASON YOU ARE IN.
IN A SPACE LIKE THE FOUNDRY IN FARGO, WITH ITS SOFT LIGHT AND OPEN, MINIMAL FEEL, THIS APPROACH COMES NATURALLY. THERE’S NOTHING COMPETING FOR YOUR ATTENTION, JUST ROOM TO CONNECT. BUT THE TRUTH IS, THIS KIND OF SESSIONS ISN’T ABOUT THE LOCATION. IT’S ABOUT THE PACE. IT’S ABOUT CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE YOU CAN FOCUS ON EACH OTHER INSTEAD OF THE CAMERA.
BECAUSE YEARS FROM NOW WHAT YOU’LL WANT TO REMEMBER ISN’T WHETHER EVERYONE WAS LOOKING PERFECTLY AT THE LENS. YOU’LL WANT TO REMEMBER HOW IT FELT TO HOLD YOUR BABY WHEN THEY WERE THIS SMALL. THE WAY YOUR FAMILY FIT TOGETHER IN THIS MOMENT. THE QUIET, ORDINARY MAGIC OF YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE.
A SLOWER APPROACH TO FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY HONORS THAT.
IT ALLOWS YOUR STORY TO UNFOLD NATURALLY, WITHOUT FORCING IT INTO SOMETHING IT’S NOT. AND IN DOING SO, IT CREATES IMAGES THAT DON’T JUST DOCUMENT YOUR FAMILY, BUT TRULY REFLECTS IT.
NOT RUSHED, NOT PERFECT, JUST REAL.
when you just let things flow you’re able to capture natural moments like these.
Most people go into a family session wondering how it’s going to go.
will the kids cooperate? will it feel awkward? will we know what to do?
these questions make sense, because for a long time, family photography has felt like something you have to get right. but a slower, more lifestyle driven approach shifts that entirely. instead of asking you to perform, it invites you to participate. its less about doing things for the camera, and more about being present with the people you love.
In these sessions, i’m not looking for perfect smiles or everyone facing the same direction at the same time. im watching for connection. the way you naturally gather close. the way your hands find each other without thinking. the way your attention always drifts back to the people who matter most.
thats the story, and the truth is, it doesn’t need much direction.
of course, i’ll guide you when needed. offering small prompts or gentle movement, but the goal is never to overtake what’s already there. it’s to create just enough space for your real interactions to rise to the surface. because when that happens, your photos stop feeling like something staged and start feeling like something lived.
this approach also allows for flexibility in a way traditional sessions often don’t. if your child wants to be held the entire time, that’s okay. if things feel a little unstructured, thats okay too. some of the most meaningful images come from moments that weren’t planned at all.
there’s a kind of freedom in that.
you’re not working against time or expectations, you’re simply moving through a moment together and in that space, things tend to unfold exactly as they should.
what you’re left with isn’t just a set of images, but a reflection of your family dynamic. the closeness, the energy, the softness, the chaos, whatever defines this season for you. it’s all part of the story, and it deserves to be remembered.
because at the end of it all, the goal isn’t perfection.
it’s recognition.
looking back at your photos and thinking, this is us.
