Trading the Midwest for the Mountains: My Next Chapter

From Fargo to Montana: A New Chapter for Out of the Dark Photography

Same girl behind the camera. New mountains to get lost in. A whole lot of stories left to tell.

Well, I guess we're doing this.

After years of calling Fargo, North Dakota home, I'm officially packing up my life, my camera gear, an embarrassing number of black clothes, and making my way to Belgrade, Montana.

And I have a lot of feelings about it.

If you've been following Out of the Dark Photography for a while, you know that this little business of mine has been a huge part of my life. It's something I've poured countless hours, late nights, creative energy, and probably a few mental breakdowns into. When i first started this business i lacked self confidence greatly, I have always been incredibly hard on myself and been my biggest critic. i never thought that this is where my business would take me, i use to dream about the day i would get my first inquiry for a wedding on my own. it felt like it would never happen, until it did. this business has been so much more than just taking a pretty picture, this business taught me confidence, persistence, determination, and the will to never give up.

And now I'm taking it somewhere completely new.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. Moving hundreds of miles away from everything familiar, rebuilding a community, and introducing my work to an entirely new wedding industry is a little intimidating.

But more than anything?

I'm really freaking excited.

To Fargo, With Love

Fargo is where Out of the Dark Photography became what it is today.

It's where I photographed some of my first weddings, met couples who trusted me with some of the biggest moments of their lives, Second shot for other wonderful photographers, and found my footing as both a photographer and a business owner.

I've spent countless evenings chasing the last bit of sunlight, third-wheeling couples who quickly became friends, and documenting love stories that reminded me why I picked up a camera in the first place.

I've met some incredibly talented wedding vendors, worked alongside creatives who inspire me, and built relationships that mean so much more than just business connections.

And somewhere along the way, I started figuring out what I actually wanted this little photography business of mine to stand for.

Not perfectly posed photographs.

Not cookie-cutter weddings.

Not doing something just because that's how it's always been done.

Real people. Real connection. And photographs that feel like something.

Fargo gave me the space to figure all of that out.

And for that, I'll always be grateful. for all of you.

So, Why Montana?

Sometimes life takes a turn you weren't expecting.

And sometimes that turn happens to lead you straight toward the mountains.

This move is about a lot more than changing my address. It's about building a life I'm excited about, stepping outside what's familiar, and giving myself the opportunity to grow both personally and creatively.

It's exciting. It's intimidating. And it's a little surreal to think that soon, the place I've called home for so long will be hundreds of miles away.

But there's something pretty incredible about starting over somewhere new while bringing everything you've worked so hard to build along with you.

I'm not starting my photography business over.

I'm bringing it with me.

Every wedding, every couple, every lesson learned, every creative risk, and every connection I've made is coming along for the ride.

Just with a much better mountain view.

Montana, Let's Talk About Your Love Stories

If you're stumbling across this blog because you're searching for a Bozeman, Belgrade, or surrounding cities Montana wedding photographer, hi. I'm so glad you're here.

I'm the face behind Out of the Dark Photography, and I have a soft spot for the people who have never quite fit into the traditional wedding mold.

The couples who would rather get married in their favorite boots than uncomfortable dress shoes.

The brides who want black wedding dresses.

The people who aren't afraid of tattoos, unconventional venues, messy hair, loud music, or doing things a little differently.

The couples who care more about how their wedding day feels than whether every little detail looks perfect.

That's my kind of crowd.

My photography leans dark, moody, emotional, and a little unconventional. But more than anything, I want your photos to feel like you.

Not a Pinterest board.

Not somebody else's wedding.

You.

Whether you're planning a big celebration in Bozeman, an intimate mountain elopement, or something completely outside the box, I'm here for it.

And yes, I'll probably be crying behind my camera during your vows or your daddy-daughter dance.

It's fine. We're fine.

What Does This Mean for Out of the Dark Photography?

First things first: my 2027 Montana wedding books are officially open!

I'll be based in Belgrade, Montana, serving Bozeman, Big Sky, Livingston, and surrounding communities, with opportunities to travel throughout the state and beyond.

I'll continue offering:

  • Wedding photography for couples who want their day documented authentically.

  • Engagement and couples sessions that feel more like a date night than an awkward photoshoot.

  • Senior portraits for the graduating class who want something beyond the traditional yearbook aesthetic.

And to my North Dakota people, don't think you're getting rid of me that easily.

I still have weddings and clients bringing me back to Fargo, and the connections I've built there aren't disappearing just because I'm moving.

Fargo will always be part of this business's story.

To the Montana Wedding Industry: Who Should I Know?

One of my favorite parts of being a wedding photographer has been getting to know the incredibly talented people behind the scenes.

The florists who turn a vision into something unreal.

The planners who somehow keep everything running while the rest of us are running on caffeine and adrenaline.

The makeup artists, hairstylists, videographers, venue owners, and fellow photographers who pour so much of themselves into what they create.

And now I get to meet a whole new community of them.

So, Montana wedding creatives, consider this my official introduction.

I want to connect, collaborate, support your businesses, and hopefully dream up some wildly creative projects together.

I'm especially excited to find other creatives who love unconventional concepts, artistic freedom, and weddings that don't necessarily follow the rulebook.

Let's make some cool shit together.

Here's to the Stories We Haven't Told Yet

It's strange to think that in a few weeks, the place I've called home for so long will no longer be where I wake up every morning.

I'm going to miss Fargo.

I'm going to miss the familiar places, the people I've met, and the couples who have trusted me to document some of the most important moments of their lives.

But I also know that growth sometimes means being willing to leave what's comfortable.

I'm proud of what I've built here.

I'm proud of the photographer I've become.

And I'm really excited to meet the version of myself who's going to exist on the other side of this move.

I don't know exactly what this next chapter will look like.

But I know it'll involve a camera, some really good music, a whole lot of exploring, and hopefully some incredible people willing to let me tell their stories.

To Fargo, thank you for everything!!!!

To Montana, I can't wait to see what we create.

With love and a little chaos,

Jordyn
